ALABAMA

Alabama joined the national Reentry 2030 initiative in October 2023, deepening the state’s whole-of-government commitment to breaking incarceration cycles by expanding access to housing, health care, and jobs. Through Reentry 2030, the state works with the CSG Justice Center to set and achieve bold new goals to improve life after jail or prison, making communities safer and healthier for everyone.

  • Reduce the recidivism rate by 50%.
  • Increase the workforce participation rate among people who have been incarcerated by 50%.
  • Created a strategic plan for reducing recidivism and removing barriers to successful reentry
  • Unanimously passed occupational licensing legislation (SB138), removing unnecessary barriers that prevent qualified people with criminal records from reentering the workforce
  • Expanded capacity and increased onsite licensed outpatient treatment and peer support for substance use disorder and mental health
  • Launched a workstation in state correctional facilities to issue driver’s licenses and state ID cards prior to release, removing one of the most significant barriers to employment, housing, and benefits
  • Broke ground on a new residential rehabilitation facility designed specifically for women reentering communities
  • Recognized nationally for its innovative reentry program, the PREP Rehabilitation Center, that provides job training, mental health services, and housing assistance
  • Hosted a first-of-its-kind job fair for Alabama that used technology to help people learn about job and education opportunities and interact with local employers
  • Increased enrollment in workforce development programming during incarceration
